about

Hypercontour’s sophomore release titled "Ambiguous" is a six track album exploring a blend of electro-acoustic recordings, field recordings, chance operations, and digital sampling/processing. Guitars are also part of the blend and one could say it is sort of a theme throughout, although the instrument is deployed in varying ways from track to track. Overall, "Ambiguous" has a loose creative approach as compared to Hypercontrour’s debut release "Dyad". It doesn’t follow any one method or production technique and is more poetic and less dense of an album.

The lead track, “Meticulous”, is the album’s busiest track with cascades of randomly layered acoustic guitar parts. There is a strict repetitive pulse in which the guitar phrases begin and end, but the phrases themselves are chaotic in rhythm and have a percussive quality. On “Mosaic” the guitars are pointillistic and peppered calmly over field recordings and soft metal clanks and scrapes.

“Blur” is mostly texture and mood employing sampled detuned guitars over dreamy soft focus static, bird recordings, and humming. “Gesture” is a guitar improvisation cut up into sample slices that were then randomly triggered and processed with chance controlled reverb effects. It was as if there was one step of “human” improv and another step of “machine” improv.

“Delta” is a playful guitar noodle with riffs sliced and sampled for extreme pitching, speeding up, and slowing down, punctuated by wood and metal thumps. “Gesture” is the oddball track consisting of a series of measured sonic flares created with bass guitar, piano, and found percussion…no six string guitar present.
